How Does Getting Tested Work?
STD testing isn’t typically part of your routine check-up or even part of a requested physical exam. If you require a test, then you must schedule an appointment with our staff. It’s best to be open to any questions that may come up so that we can adequately assist you. Our staff needs to know:
- Details of any symptoms you might have
- If you or if your partner have had an STD previously
- The kind of sexual intercourse you had
- How and what type of protection you used
- Any other habits that may increase your chance of getting an STD
Talking about getting tested for STDs may feel awkward or uncomfortable. We’re here to let you know there’s no need to worry! Our professional staff is here to help and support you no matter what the results may be. Most people get tested for an STD at least once in their life. It is the responsible thing to do for both you and your partners. Getting tested means that you are taking care of your overall health.
What To Know: Testing Preparations
There are no significant ways to prepare for an STD test. For specific tests, it is only crucial that you do not urinate for about an hour before visiting the clinic. Urinating and taking the test too soon could clean out some of the necessary DNA build-ups.
How Soon Will You See Results
Results typically take up to 48 hours, depending on the test being performed. We will contact you for any changes or follow-ups if needed. Please note that some tests that require blood work may take up to two weeks for results to come back.
There’s no need to stress if you do get positive results. All sexually transmitted diseases are potentially treatable. Remember, getting tested is the first step in living a better, healthier life, and avoiding transmission to anyone else.
Learn How You Can Avoid Giving or Getting an STD
There are many ways to avoid getting an STD, all of which dramatically reduce your chances of getting one.
- Use a latex condom during any intercourse.
- Avoid sexual practices that could tear or break the skin. Even the smallest of cuts that do not bleed let bacteria and germs pass through.
- Get immunized. Vaccinations can help prevent hepatitis B and particular HPV.
- Know your sexual partners and try to limit the number you have. Even your partner’s sexual history can affect yours. The more either side has increases the chances of getting an STD.
